St. Patrick’s Day at Michelle’s House: A Celebration of Community, Culture, and Visibility

Every March, the streets of New Haven come alive with music, color, and tradition as the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade winds its way through the city. What many people don’t know is that Michelle’s House SCDAA-CT, located at 1389 Chapel Street, sits right along the parade route—giving us a front row seat to one of the region’s most cherished cultural events.

This year, our team stepped outside to enjoy the celebration and capture a few photos as the parade passed by our front door. The sound of drums, the bright green attire, and the joyful energy of families lining the sidewalks created a powerful reminder of what community truly means.

A Moment of Celebration, A Message of Awareness

While St. Patrick’s Day is not directly connected to our mission, moments like this matter. They allow us to:

  •  Showcase Michelle’s House as a welcoming, active part of the New Haven community

  • Increase visibility for sickle cell disease awareness simply by being present

  • Connect with neighbors who may not yet know about our services

  • Celebrate culture and togetherness, values deeply aligned with our work

Our banner hung proudly as thousands walked by—a small but meaningful reminder that sickle cell disease affects families right here in Connecticut, and that support, education, and advocacy are available close to home.

Honoring Tradition, Strengthening Community

The St. Patrick’s Day Parade is one of the oldest in the country, dating back to the 1800s. It has always been a celebration of heritage, resilience, and community pride. In many ways, these themes mirror the strength of the sickle cell community—families who show courage, perseverance, and unity every day.

We are grateful to be part of a city that embraces cultural diversity and community connection. Whether through health education, family support, or simply showing up for local traditions, Michelle’s House remains committed to being a visible and active partner in the Greater New Haven region.
