It is with profound sadness and deep gratitude for a life of extraordinary service that Michelle’s House, Sickle Cell Disease Association of America, Connecticut, announces the passing of our beloved President, Mr. James E. Rawlings, at the age of 81.
Born in Providence, Rhode Island, Mr. Rawling’s journey was defined by a steadfast commitment to community, equity, and healing. A proud graduate of the University of Rhode Island College of Pharmacy, Mr. Rawlings later earned his Master of Public Health from Yale University, a testament to his lifelong pursuit of knowledge and his unwavering dedication to public health.
Mr. Rawling’s impact on Connecticut’s health is immeasurable. For 35 years, he served Yale New Haven Hospital with distinction, retiring as Assistant Vice President and Executive Director of Community Health. His vision transformed how care reached the most vulnerable, and his legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched.
Mr. Rawlings was a force for justice and compassion beyond the hospital walls. As a leader in the NAACP at both the national and state levels, he championed civil rights and served as President of the New Haven Branch for over eight years. His leadership as Board Chair for the AIDS Interfaith Network and the Ella B. Scantlebury Home reflected his profound commitment to dignity and care for all.
At SCDAA CT/ Michelle’s House, Mr. Rawlings was more than our President; He brought wisdom, and an unshakable sense of purpose to every meeting, every event, and every family he supported. His vision for a world where those with sickle cells are seen, heard, and cared for will continue to guide us.
Mr. Rawling’s service extended into every facet of his life. He was a proud member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, an elder of the Seaconke Wampanoag Tribe of Massachusetts, and a mentor to generations of advocates and leaders.
Mr. Rawlings is survived by his devoted wife, his six cherished children, and eight beloved grandchildren. To his family, we offer our deepest condolences and heartfelt thanks for sharing him with us and with the world.
We remember Mr. Rawlings not only for his titles and achievements but for his warmth, his laughter, and his unwavering belief in the power of community. His legacy is a living one, written in the lives he uplifted and the hope he inspired.
We invite all who knew and loved Mr. Rawlings to share memories, condolences, and tributes to place on our website over the next 30 days as we celebrate a life that truly made a difference.
